چکیده

We analyze the observed properties of nested and single stellar bar systems in disk galaxies. The 112 galaxies in our sample comprise the largest matched Seyfert vs. non-Seyfert galaxy sample of nearby galaxies with complete near-infrared or optical imaging sensitive to lengthscales ranging from tens of pc to tens of kpc. The presence of bars is deduced by fitting ellipses to isophotes in HST H-band images up to 10 radius, and in ground-based near-infrared and optical images outside the H-band images. This is a conservative approach that is likely to result in an underestimate of the true bar fraction. We find that a significant fraction of the sample galaxies, 18% ± 4%, has more than one bar, and that 29% ± 5% of barred galaxies have nested bars. For these nested bars, we detect a clear division in length between the large-scale (primary) bars and small-scale (secondary) bars, both in absolute and normalized (to the size of the galaxy) length. We argue that this bimodal distribution can be understood within the framework of disk resonances, specifically the inner Lindblad resonances (ILRs), which are located where the gravitational potential of the innermost galaxy switches effectively from 3D to 2D. This conclusion is further strengthened by the observed distribution of the sizes of nuclear rings which are dynamically associated with the ILRs. While primary bars are found to correlate with the host galaxy sizes, no such correlation is observed for the secondary bars. Moreover, we find that secondary bars differ morphologically from single bars. Overall, our matched Seyfert and non-Seyfert samples show a statistically significant excess of bars among the Seyfert galaxies at practically all lengthscales. We confirm our previous results that bars are more abundant in Seyfert hosts than in non-Seyferts, and that Seyfert galaxies always show a preponderance of “thick” bars compared to the bars in non-Seyfert galaxies. Finally, no correlation is observed between the presence of a bar and that of companion galaxies, even relatively bright ones. AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

The Fueling of Nuclear Activity: II. The Bar Properties of Seyfert and Normal Galaxies

We use a recent near-infrared imaging survey of samples of Seyfert and normal galaxies to study the role of bars in the fueling of nuclear activity. The active galaxy sample includes Seyfert galaxies in the Revised Shapely-Ames (RSA) and Sandage & Tammann’s (1987) extension to this catalog. The normal galaxies were selected to match the Seyfert sample in Hubble type, redshift, inclination and b...

The effect of bars on the obscuration of active nuclei

We present evidence for a strong correlation between the gaseous absorbing column density towards type 2 Seyfert nuclei and the presence of a stellar bar in their host galaxies. Strongly barred Seyfert 2 galaxies have an average NH that is two orders of magnitude higher than non-barred Seyfert 2s. More than 80% of Compton thick (NH > 1024cm−2) Seyfert 2s are barred. This result indicates that s...

Deficiency of "Thin" Stellar Bars in Seyfert Host Galaxies.

Using all available major samples of Seyfert galaxies and their corresponding closely matched control samples of nonactive galaxies, we find that the bar ellipticities (or axial ratios) in Seyfert galaxies are systematically different from those in nonactive galaxies. Overall, there is a deficiency of bars with large ellipticities (i.e., "thin" or "strong" bars) in Seyfert galaxies compared to ...

A subarcsecond resolution near-infrared study of Seyfert and ‘normal’ galaxies: II. Morphology

We present a detailed study of the bar fraction in the CfA sample of Seyfert galaxies, and in a carefully selected control sample of non-active galaxies, to investigate the relation between the presence of bars and of nuclear activity. To avoid the problems related to bar classification in the RC3, e.g., subjectivity, low resolution and contamination by dust, we have developed an objective bar ...
